LIFX Tiles Feature Smart Lights with Apple Homekit Review

NOTE: The first thing you need to know about the LIFX Tiles Smart Lights is that they were announced as going away at CES 2020. LFIX will no longer be making these lights so if they are something you’ve been on the fence about, you might want to pick them up now.

LIFX Tiles

I’ve never made it a secret that I’m a big fan of the LIFX product line and the LIFX Tiles do not disappoint. The LIFX Tiles is comes in a set of 5 tiles . Each Tile is in a 1′ x 1′ form-factor and contains 64 individually addressable full colored LEDs. Yup – 64 Colors at the same time from a Single tile and 320 individually addressable LEDS across the entire set of 5.

I’ll just let that sink in for a second.

LIFX has pioneered the polychrome technology in various of there other products including

LIFX Z Strip

LIFX Candles

LIFX Beam

but the Tiles product is something special in that the size of each tile and the horizontal and vertical layout of the LEDs allow the tile to create amazing affects which just aren’t possible in the other products.

From what I can tell, the Tiles were a product that had some initial issues with firmware and a couple of bad reviews on cable management so let’s address those first.

Firmware

The Firmware has, in my mind, been addressed. With over 10 sets of these in my home, I can honestly say that the LIFX tiles are a stable product.

Cable Management

Having looked into some of the critiques around the cable management, I’ve found that the reviewers who found this didn’t take the time to really experience what the Tile has to offer and how flexible it really is.

Competitors

It often gets compared to the Nanoleaf Feature lights but to be honest, after living with products from both vendors for a long time. The Tile is just a different product with different uses. The Nanoleaf is a great product and their dynamic scenes are some of the best on the market. It’s typically the focus point of any room. The LIFX Tile on the other hand CAN be a focus, but is just as suited to fade into the background to set the mood without drawing everyone’s attention away from what’s going on in the space.

What do you guys think?
